Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 2 ⅔ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Whole almonds for fingernails
  • ½ cup strawberry jam or red gel icing for “blood”

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in egg, vanilla, and almond extract.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually mix dry ingredients into the wet until a dough forms.
  6. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  7. Roll small portions of dough into finger shapes and place them on the baking sheet.
  8. Press one almond at the tip of each finger to resemble a nail.
  9. Use a knife to score “knuckle” lines on each finger.
  10. Bake for 12–15 minutes until slightly golden.
  11. Let cool, then remove almonds, add a bit of strawberry jam, and press almonds back in to create a “bloody” effect.
  12. Serve and watch them disappear at your Halloween gathering!

Notes

  • For extra spookiness, dust cookies with cocoa powder for a dirty look.
  • Dough can be made 1 day ahead and chilled overnight.
  • You can swap strawberry jam with raspberry for a darker “blood” look.
